Old Timers Hockey Fights CancerGetting the chance to re-connect with someone from my past is a rare and unexpected treat and then finding out that we have something in common is even better.

Meet John Thompson – a retired Vice-Principal. Did I say retired?? How is that possible that I have friends who are old enough to be retired? Clearly this is a blog post for a different day.

John and I met again after more than a couple of decades at a social function and he subsequently contacted me to see if I could help get the word out about a fundraising initiative he was a part of, to help fight cancer.

I hate cancer.

It took my mother after 7 different bouts of primary cancers in about 26 years so anything I can do to help is what I want to do.

For John, this was personal. His friend and team mate George Nickerson’s wife Dawn is undergoing chemotherapy treatment at the moment and this exercise is one in support of Team Dawn.

In an email Q & A, John lays it all out:

What was your inspiration in organizing this tournament?

“PJ – George Nickerson organized the International Friendly vs the Swiss team. He is not able to play since he is caring for his wife.  The inspiration is simple. Do something for a team mate!  He is a kind, caring and tremendous team member.  We all care for each other and this was what I could do.”

In what way has cancer touched your life?

Cancer touches us all directly or indirectly.  Obviously I have been touched both ways as has my family.  I lost both my parents at a young age and I believe Cancer is one of the cruelest words in the English language so it was easy for me to want to do whatever I could in the fight.

How can people help in this effort?

This is easy – 2 steps:

1.  Donate an auction item.  Every item helps

2.  Register and bid on the great prizes “

“OldTimers know no boundaries hence an International Friendly. Cancer knows no boundaries – Hence OldTimers Fight Cancer!!!”
