I can’t quite get over my reaction to Adam Rippon’s obvious pain in his shoulder as he landed awkwardly on his opening quad Lutz jump. Two skaters before, Daniel Samohin fell awkwardly on a jump and dislocated his shoulder and consequently had to withdraw from the men’s event at Skate America in Lake Placid. My sources reported that Daniel’s shoulder was pushed back into place by backstage medical staff and he was transported to

Back to the (glorious) free program from Adam and as he winced and kind of jerked his shoulder, I thought Ha! Adam’s making a funny, pretending that he has hurt his shoulder as a homage of sorts to Daniel. In the very next moment, I said to myself: “Kwonger, now I am the one needing to give my head a jerk – Adam must have hurt himself. In the middle of a free program would NOT be the time to be playing around!!”
Funny how it takes a moment for your thinking self to catch up with something unusual happening in an event, like a dislocated shoulder. Especially when the dislocation ‘lightning’ strikes
My friend Jackie Wong (rockerskating.com) came up with the interesting tidbit that Todd Eldredge had also (partially) dislocated his shoulder 20 years ago in 1997 at Skate America.
So, I guess it is really true: Ice is slippery after all.
It goes without saying that I am hoping that everyone concerned gets back to full strength and Adam will be at 100% for the Grand Prix Final.
