One of the benefits of going to Peterborough for the Rock The Ice III show was getting the chance to say hi to Shawn Sawyer.

Having retired about a year ago, I was interested to know what he had been up to.

“It used to be that at competitions I was doing my competitive programs in practice ad then after the competition would do the show. It was fun.  now: it’s all fun because I am doing shows all of the time. In fact for this show, this is part of my holidays. I spent the first half of my holidays in Cuba and now I am here.”

There is no doubt that his trademark creativity came with him to Peterborough. All of the things that make Shawn’s skating so entertaining are in full force: the innovation, the flexibility and the musicality.

It is those very same qualities that led Shawn to 4 national medals. I also vividly recall a particularly magical performance at the ISU Grand Prix Skate America event in the Fall of 2009 where Shawn skated to his first GP  medal: a silver.

Of the skaters on the scene today, Shawn has a fondness for Japan’s Daisuke Takahashi’s style. He also admires many of the pro skaters on and off the ice for what they do: “Usually I am backstage for shows but I have to admit when Jamie (Sale) and David (Pelletier) skate, I come out front to see them. I watch their whole programs.”
