Now what?
All week long I have been thinking of the skaters I watched last weekend in Vancouver, at the Canadian Tire National Figure Skating Championships. Regardless of their success or failure, a door has opened (or closed) and it’s time to figure out what comes next.
Making decisions and changes isn’t always easy. I am lucky in that once I arrive at a decision, I can just go with it. I believe at every fork in the road, it doesn’t really matter in the moment which path you take; as every path leads somewhere. It is only after the fact, that you can see that if you hadn’t gone right (or left) you would never have ended up ‘here’.
Here is best. Here is where you can make the choices. I used to struggle with trying to re-live the past or anticipating 10 seconds into the future. Both places in the mind are common to figure skaters.
Those who struggle in the heat of a performance would like nothing better than the chance to do it all over again. For those skaters worried about the next jump and trying to anticipate; trying to be 10 seconds in the future means they aren’t doing the preparation in the present.
For today – I am not going to hyperventilate about my ever-growing list of tasks. I am going to check things off one at a time, like I would if I were skating a terrific free program.
For the record, I am starting with the easy tasks like laundry, in the way that a fully and sensibly evolved and present-minded person would do. I am also assuming that with this strategy, the 10 seconds into the future that I am trying to anticipate, will then take care of itself.
Wish me luck. I now know: now what.
