I am not the typical sport lover.

Anyone who knows me knows that I typically don’t have a clue as to the names of sports teams or the athletes contained therein and that goes double for the pros.

What I do love are the athletes. As a coach, and former (kinda) athlete, I know what it’s like to be out there giving it your all without any hope of recognition, world-wide domination or let’s face it: success. Training for training’s sake. Joy. Accomplishment. Pride.

Such is not the case for the athletes headed to Toronto for the TORONTO 2015 Parapan American Games in August. These are as talented, disciplined, diverse and devoted athletes as there can be.

Passion is what brings them forward.

I got the chance to work at two Paralympic events –  Wheelchair Fencing in Athens and Wheelchair Curling in Sochi. What was fascinating for me were the stories. Sports stories are the best. Across the various Fields of Play, regardless of the level, there are athletes superstitiously putting on one shoe before the other, rubbing their lucky charm, and/or wearing their lucky underwear and hoping that things are going to go as well in competition as they do in practice.

It doesn’t always go as planned and will have me on the edge of my seat as his- and her-story unfolds in August.

Kurt Browning is a four-time World figure skating champion who understands what it’s like to ride the highest wave to the top of the podium and  also fail to hit his mark.

Passion is what heals the heartbreak and fuels the success.

He also understands what it’s like to be an athlete. Why say ‘Para’ athlete, when just ‘athlete’ will do. After all; at any level where a person is devoted to their sport, they are simply an athlete.
