I am totally psyched about going to this year’s Skate Canada International in Regina. First of all, it’s a chance to have a visit with cousins who live there, and secondly, it’s a chance to see some great skating.

My family is the perfect representation for many new fans headed to the rink for a competition; they bought tickets as soon as they went on sale, they haven’t seen figure skating live, they know they are in for a treat.

So are the rest of us.

So – cousins – this one is for you. A look at some Canadian superstars.

I remember the Skate Canada in 2012 where now World silver medallist Kaetlyn Osmond won the title. It was her first Grand Prix event ever and she had been entered as a last-minute replacement for a skater who had withdrawn. It created quite the stir when she couldn’t secure a second GP event and therefore couldn’t qualify for the Grand Prix Final.

Look for Kaetlyn to dominate in the ladies’ event.

If you haven’t seen Patrick Chan skate – time you did. The Skate Canada event has been good to him. Along the way, Patrick has collected six Skate Canada titles but with World silver medallist Shoma Uno also expected in Regina, Chan’s road to a seventh title will be a challenge.

Sublime. That’s how I describe Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir. For fans heading to Regina, getting the chance to see 2010 Olympic champions and 2014 Olympic silver medallists is an amazing opportunity. Their chameleon-like ability to portray characters and themes is matched only by their connection to the audience.

Ice dance fans are in for a ‘twofer’: two outstanding Canadian ice dance teams for the price of one. I am speaking about the two-time Skate Canada International champions and two-time world medallists, Kaitlyn Weaver and Andrew Poje. Kaitlyn and Andrew are dynamic, powerful and entertaining in a way that always captures the imagination.

Courageous. That’s the word that I use to describe two-time World champions Meagan Duhamel and Eric Radford. They reveal themselves every time they skate and work as hard as anyone to achieve what they have. I admire that they have continued to chase ways to make improvements including making changes with coaching and choreography. They will be going head to head with Aliona Savchenko and Bruno Massot who finished second in the world in 2017.
